In Episode 50, EMIGcast host Aaron Wille sits down with Dr. Juan Piantino, the Director of Pediatric Neurology at Doernbecher’s Childrens Hospital, to discuss the must-know clinical management and treatment strategies for pediatric patients presenting to the ED in status epilepticus. While vast in the variability of etiologies or precipitants, the acute management of these patients is fairly congruent, and similarly to acute MI, should become second nature for all students in the emergency department. There is no mention of specific articles or texts in the episode however following a review of the chapter “Seizures and Status Epilepticus” from Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine handbook, our guest felt it would be great read to follow along during this episode’s discussion.

We want to credit artist/producer Brian Foo who composed the outro music for the episode. The track is part of the “Data-Driven DJ” project and was produced by “generat(ing) a musical sequence using EEG brain wave data of an anonymous female pediatric patient with epilepsy. The song (played in full) examines the periods before, during, and after a (40 second) seizure.” More information on this unique project can be found here.

Last but not least, we would like to extend a big thanks to Alex Salce of Portland, OR who helped compose and produce our new theme music. Unveiled here on our 50th episode, we felt it was a good representation of our continued efforts to bring ideas, information, and inspiration to EM-bound medical students as we move on to the next academic year.

Hope you enjoy. Thanks for listening.
